Seven Project Ideas

Idea 1: Create a multimedia presentation using Prezi or Photopeach in which you compare the education or political system in Egypt (or any other Arab Country) and compare it with the education system in the USA.

Level: Intermediate high
Targeted Standards:

1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the various culture of the Arab World.
3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through Arabic.
4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures of the Arab world and their own.

In order for you to do this, you need to:

learn how to use Prezi and/ or Photopeach.
In addition, and this is far more important and it requires more work: You need to collect the material needed to create the Prezi or Photopeach. You need images and other information about your project.
Find Youtube videos about your topic

Idea 2: Create an invitation (poster) to a Eid/ Birthday or any other party using Glogster. On your Glog you must use images, text and a map. Say where (with a google map of the place) and when the party will be, who is coming, what should people bring with them and what they will be expecting at the party (music, food, drinks, etc.) Post the invitation on your blog or send it via e-mail.

Targeted Standards:

1.1: Students engage in conversations and correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the various culture of the Arab World (Focus on practices such as traditions, norms, beliefs and societal structure).
4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures of the Arab world and their own.

Idea 3: Use Photopeach and create a quiz on a unit you have just finished teaching, for example on greetings, body parts or on any grammatical topic (e.g. verb conjugations or plural).

Idea 4: Use Photopeach and create a quiz on the Arab world: names of countries, capitals, rivers, mountains, populations, personalities, etc.

Idea 5: Use Mind42.com to create a mind map in Arabic on any of the following topics: the seasons, body parts, Arab writers, holidays, clothing, family members, … Your mind map must include images, text and also audio or video from the Internet.

Idea 6: Create your own virtual restaurant by either using Glogster or a Blog. Make sure that everything is in Arabic: Address, the opening and closing times, telephone number, and most importantly a menu (using Glogster) with ingredients for each meal. Add images for each menu item (food and drinks).

Idea 7: Create a virtual trip to the Arab World, e.g. from Casablanca in Morocco to Cairo in Egypt or from Aqaba in Jordan to Halab in Syria to Al Basra in Iraq, … Use maps, images of tourist sites, currency needed, and create a route using either Google Earth or google maps. Add also some sound files (popular music from each country). You may use Woices, Glogster, Blog, Voice Thread, or all three.

You can create a Glog about an Arab country (country profile) with statistics, a map, the flag, the national anthem, a short video on the country, history, etc.
Create a Glog about a famous peronality from the Arab World (poet, politician, musician, dancer, etc.) incorporting important information about him/her, an image, what he/she has done and samples of their works (text, video, audio, images)
Create a timeline of the history of a certain country or nation.
Create an invitation to for a party: When, where, who is coming, what will you offer to eat and drink, how to rsvp, etc. Add music, images, and more.
Create a Glog using an image of the Nile in Egypt and Sudan and marking important tourist attractions with important dates...
Create a Glog on the geography of the Middle East.

Interested in improving your ability to teach Arabic or Chinese? Want to learn new strategies that engage and excite students using film, role-playing, problem-solving and more? Interested in learning how to become a certified instructor or go on to earn a master’s degree?

The Institute will provide an innovative, engaging and reality-based approach to assist all participants to develop a solid foundation to pursue continued professional growth as instructors of Arabic or Chinese.

Course Name: TSL 566 OL: Strategies for Teaching Foreign Languages (with emphasis on Arabic and Chinese).
Course Dates: July 27, 2009 through August 21, 2009 (online and on campus)
Location: Online and at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157
Cost: Only $410.00 *
Credit: 3 Graduate Credits **

Join us for a three hour informative meeting to welcome you. Our focus will be to assist you with your computer needs and provide you with an overview of the course. Tuesday July 28th 6:00 - 9:00 PM or Wednesday July 29th 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. (Location to be announced). Individually paced directed readings. Friday online practice option (10:00 - 11:00 AM).

(2) Week of August 3rd – 7th

This class will meet online each evening (Monday - Wednesday) from 7:00 – 9:00 PM Easter Time.

(3) Week of August 10th - 14th

This week we will meet face to face at McDaniel College from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM.

(4) Week of August 17th - 21st

This class will meet online each evening (Monday - Thursday) from 7:00 – 9:00 PM Easter Time.

* Through a grant from StarTalk and a special discounted rate from McDaniel College, the total cost of this 3-credit graduate course is $410, not including materials. This is a 2-week professional development Summer Institute designed to help teachers integrate technology tools and 21st century language pedagogy in the NVCC/APS Arabic and Chinese curricula. The infusion of modern methodologies in the Arabic and Chinese programs will promote time on task among students and motivate them to persist in their language study. In order to keep learners engaged, teachers must include the most effective, standards-based activities, emphasizing all modes of communication and culture. Arabic and Chinese teachers in each language will create a collection of activities to expand the curriculum presently in place. The networking that will result from the course will enrich instruction and save teachers the task of “reinventing the wheel” by creating materials in isolation.

For the Arabic teachers, I am planning on adding new things for those who took the workshop last year, work with them closely on continuing to develop what they have learned last year, but above all, working with all of you, one on one, to meet your own needs. After you sign up fro the workshop, I'll be e-mailing you a questionaire, which will help me determine your immediate needs and this way I can design my part of the workshop accordingly.

Here are some of the things I have so far in mind. However, I am always open to any suggestions and anything you need (that I know how to do):

Improving your syllabus and adding technology components to it
Learn how to use the Internet more effectively, i.e. downloading videos from YouTube, etc.
Create your own attractive and effective multimedia PowerPoint
Create your own Blog or Wiki
Create your own videos (educational videos or music videos) with 1, 2, 3 steps
Using Blackboard more effectively

A workshop is as good as its participants and not its facilitator. The best workshops are those, in which the participants create their own materials with the guidance of a facilitator. I don't want you to copy what I do. I believe that you should learn how to use technology to meet your own needs, and therefore, the workshop will be tailored according to the needs of the participants.
