Startalk at McDaniel College

McDaniel College/CHS STARTALK 2009:

Summer Arabic and Chinese Teachers’ Program

Interested in improving your ability to teach Arabic or Chinese? Want to learn new strategies that engage and excite students using film, role-playing, problem-solving and more? Interested in learning how to become a certified instructor or go on to earn a master’s degree?

The Institute will provide an innovative, engaging and reality-based approach to assist all participants to develop a solid foundation to pursue continued professional growth as instructors of Arabic or Chinese.

Course Name: TSL 566 OL: Strategies for Teaching Foreign Languages (with emphasis on Arabic and Chinese).
Course Dates: July 27, 2009 through August 21, 2009 (online and on campus)
Location: Online and at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157
Cost: Only $410.00 *
Credit: 3 Graduate Credits **
Application Deadline: June 30, 2009

Requirements: Participants will be responsible for submitting an application for graduate study, and an official transcript from an accredited institution verifying a bachelor’s degree.

The program will require face-to-face meetings at McDaniel College and participation online. Our calendar is as follows:

(1) Week of July 27th

Join us for a three hour informative meeting to welcome you. Our focus will be to assist you with your computer needs and provide you with an overview of the course. Tuesday July 28th 6:00 - 9:00 PM or Wednesday July 29th 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. (Location to be announced). Individually paced directed readings. Friday online practice option (10:00 - 11:00 AM).

(2) Week of August 3rd – 7th

This class will meet online each evening (Monday - Wednesday) from 7:00 – 9:00 PM Easter Time.

(3) Week of August 10th - 14th

This week we will meet face to face at McDaniel College from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM.

(4) Week of August 17th - 21st

This class will meet online each evening (Monday - Thursday) from 7:00 – 9:00 PM Easter Time.

* Through a grant from StarTalk and a special discounted rate from McDaniel College, the total cost of this 3-credit graduate course is $410, not including materials. Participants pay $590 (this includes a $50 one-time non-refundable application fee) when registering for the “TSL 566 OL Strategies for Teaching Foreign Languages” course. Participants will receive a $180 stipend from the Center for Human Services upon successful completion of the course.
